This autumn, Bankside Gallery and Eton College are bringing together a selection of works from Eton’s artists in residence in the exciting Art Makes Art exhibition. The works cover a variety of media ranging from painting, digital art and sculpture to relief, silkscreen and intaglio printmaking. Both figurative and abstract work as well as conceptual art will be represented in the exhibition which includes artists Hughie O’Donoghue RA, Anne Desmet RA, Ray Richardson, Anthony Frost, Ade Adesina RSA, Liane Laing, Guler Ates, Christopher Oldfield, Katherine Jones RE, George Butler and Lucy Bainbridge. The exhibition runs from 22 - 28 November 2021.
Eton College has hosted artists in residence since 2013. The programme enables a practising artist to operate and work in the studios of the College’s Drawing Schools, inspiring pupils and developing their understanding on a variety of contemporary art practices. Students can see the development of a work of art from start to finish gaining an understanding of the full creative art process, enthusing and inspiring them to undertake their own artistic experimentation and journey. It is a symbiotic relationship where all parties benefit from the collaboration. The scheme, since its inception, has been generously supported by Old Etonian, James McLaren.
Eton College’s Head of Art, Ian Burke said:
“It has been a very rewarding experience working with the artist in residence scheme in the Drawing Schools for both students and teaching staff and this exhibition is a brilliant way to celebrate the success of the programme and demonstrate the talent of the artists involved.
"We recruit artists that we feel fill the gaps in our department’s experiences of conceptual ideas and alternative handling of materials. Each year the artist in residence is selected by the department enabling us to construct schemes of work for different year groups that complement the skills and interests of each artist. The artists have also influenced colleagues in the Drawing School and their course content and teaching practice.”
