Mark Raggett was born in Pembrokeshire, the landscape of the county being the main source of inspiration in his work over the years. He studied Fine Art at Reading University where he was strongly influenced by the Cornish painters (Lanyon, Frost, Hilton etc) but Graham Sutherland’s work in translating the essence of the Pembrokeshire countryside has always had a strong fascination for him. Images are gathered in numerous sketch books, usually in pen & ink or graphite, which then help to inform more finished works in the studio. The rich geology of the coastline has a strong sculptural and elemental quality which he records along with minutiae of details to be found in natural forms along the foreshores and harbours of this stunning and unique part of the world.
