The beginning of an etching can be a word or phrase, something seen or remembered which is then developed through drawings, and sketches from life, into an imaginary composition.  This acts as a guide for the drawing made directly onto the etching plate.  The figures seem to be a moments of reflection or realisation which adds to the sense of a poetic logic within the work.
