Sarah Holliday trained as a biochemist, but almost immediately decided all she wanted to do was to paint. She has no formal art training, which she thinks is, more often than not, a blessing. She has always been interested in the way we exist in the spaces around us. These could be physical spaces, such as within the city, or personal, internal spaces. That is up to the viewer to interpret. Up to fairly recently, she has focused on representing the recognizable spaces, and implying the personal spaces. Now, she is allowing the specific representation to be much more implied, although the paintings still refer to specific places and moments as she paints them. She uses watercolour, gouache, pencil, and whatever else it takes. These are layered on, scrubbed off, and re-found, until she has just the right feel and expression.
