Bankside Gallery | 2 - 4pm | Free admission | No booking required

Ink painting has a long and deep-rooted history in China; however, artists Weimin He, Liu Hongzhi and Wang Chunjie tend to take the tradition into a more contemporary arena. Each of them has developed their own distinctive style, and their mutual goal is to utilise the medium to explore their innermost thoughts. San Xiang – loosely translated to ‘Three marks of existence’ – is an exhibition of works by these three artists responding to the ever-changing world.

In this event, we will hear from the exhibition curator, Dr Katie Hill, before taking a tour around the exhibition with the artists. Liu Hongzhi and Weimin He will offer a brief history of Chinese calligraphy and Chinese painting, before doing some demonstrations of four primary calligraphy styles and painting subjects such as bamboo and birds.

2 - 2:30pm: Curator’s talk by Dr Katie Hill

2:30 - 3pm: Artists’ gallery tour

3 - 4pm: Chinese calligraphy talk and demonstration by Liu Hongzhi

This event is free and there is no need to book.
